The Early Christian art covers the two periods of Persecution and Recognition from the first century to the year 526. Rare are the artworks that have been left from this period, and those few are still being tested for authenticity. It is said that not much works from the Christians have flourished mainly because of the persecution during this period. Medieval art during this centuries are also influenced by artistic pagan media forms such as frescos and mosaics. Three periods then compose the Byzantine Art which started with a transition from the Early Christian period. Constantinople was the center of major art productions. Medieval art that belongs to the 7th to 10th century belongs to the Insular art movement which refers to the artistic style by Ireland and Germany. The arts produced during the Migration period (300-900) was inspired by the Germans and Eastern Europeans move in history and has been the proprietor of the polychrome style and the animal style.
Arts influenced and created inside Islamic populations belong to the movement of the Islamic arts, which are created by both Muslims and non-Muslims. The theme revolves not only within the religion as it reflects influences such as Chinese as well as the early medieval art periods. The Pre-Romanesque period is at times difficult to distinguish from Byzantine art as both reflect close artistic similarities that the former is sometimes interchangeably referred to as a Post-Byzantine period. Carolingian art, which transpired during Charlemagne’s period, Ottonian art named from the three Saxon emperors, and the Anglo-Saxon art from King Alfred to the beginning of the Romanesque movements are part of the Pre-Romanesque era.
The Romanesque art has been considerably influenced by Byzantine art as well. Aside from painting, the usage of other media such as metalworks, ivories, and enamels have been refined. Medieval arts, in general, possess fiver characteristics. First is the use of vivid colors in artworks, particularly in paintings to reflect the variety of influences. Another is the use of perspective and the emotions that are conveyed in figures. History has inspired much of the themes in the pieces created during these years. Fourth is humanism and the fifth is the theme that involves religious and secular subjects, such as Christianity and Islam. Medieval art covers broad subjects that have, up to now, inspired several contemporary designs.
