Art and Culture in the Native American Paintings

The culture that surrounds the Native American people is diverse and comes beautifully in touch with nature and its people. Much of the Native American paintings can be found on their war attires, tipi covers and petroglyphs or rock carvings as well as the paintings found inside the caves. The themes revolve on traditional tribal practices, insights and heritage, as well as elements of nature such as the animals and the scenery. Their tradition has covered an expansive 4,000 years and at times has adapted the Western painting styles for the more contemporary Native American paintings.

Along with the art that the Native Americans are famous for are the Navajo sandpaintings. These are originally considered as a form of sacred art, especially for healing ceremonies, but have, through time, become an expression of secular culture. Colored sands are poured onto a surface of either a Hogan (the traditional dwelling of the Navajo people) or a buckskin or tarpaulin to make these Navajo sandpaintings.

To describe the Native American paintings, one would need an imagination as colorful as their art. The vividness of the surroundings is matched in every work, and even the fine lines of a tribal chief’s face are carefully imprinted to come to life. The spirit and life of these paintings have the capacity to convey the message of strength and pride in their heritage. Aside from paintings, the Native American art would also include sculptures of the animals and people, ceramics, and woven textiles.

In the world of Native American paintings, contemporary artists such as JoAnne Bird, Dana Tiger, Joanne Swanson, Ursher Taylor and L. David Eveningthunder have captured the historical heritage into their pieces. Meanwhile, since the year 1950, the artists Fritz Scholder, Rick Bartow and R.C. Gorman have been making a reputation with the Native American paintings.

There have been imitations of the paintings that claim to have the same style and artistic theme. However, true art enthusiasts must be careful of these replicas and correctly choose the credibility of the art dealers, especially web based ones. The natives may have grown less in number but heir culture and arts are still expanding. Aside from promoting their culture and preserving their history through their works, these painters have also introduced a new form of art which catches the environment in a closer contact while emphasizing their tradition. Native American paintings may have borrowed techniques from other art movements, especially the Western style, but have maintained the general theme that their works have been inspired with as passed from one generation to another.

Today, Native American paintings are more actively endorsed in art colleges and art functions. Art as an important part of their history are relearned and passed on, so that even with the modernization of the lifestyle, its descendants are still bound by the images and tradition that are captured by their works. These creations and masterpieces are yet another proof of the spontaneity of art and the uniqueness and dynamism of each cultural influence.
