Among the religious figures that has captured the inspiration of many artists is no less than Jesus Christ. Paintings of Jesus have been revolving through many aspects of His life, from Mary’s immaculate conception, to the Nativity scene, from His childhood as the carpenter to the miracles He has performed during His ministry. Of course, most paintings would never miss the crucifixion and death at the cross. Here are some of the paintings of Jesus that not only showed the artist’s devotion to religion but also became widely known for the masterful art of portrayal.

Considerably the most popular may be Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper during the 1940s. The scene speaks of the story when Christ informed of His disciples regarding an impending betrayal, as stated in the Gospel of John. Da Vinci was commissioned by Duke Ludovico Sforza and duchess Beatrice d’Este to be placed on a wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy.

Two famous paintings of Jesus would come from another artistic genius is Raphael, who rivals Michaelangelo and da Vinci during the Renaissance period. His works are the Mond Crucifixion made between 1503-1503 which shows Jesus, two angels, the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, John the Baptist and St. Jerome; and The Transfiguration which was believed to be finished by Raphael’s student, named Guilo Romano, due to the former’s death in 1520.

Another Renaissance painter, Sandro Botticelli contributed to the paintings of Jesus his masterpiece called The Mystical Nativity. Aside from the vivid imagination captured, this painting is the only remaining work that has been signed by Botticelli. The blessed family is depicted to be in a stable, but have gone beyond the usual nativity scene as there are symbolisms also manifesting in the artwork.

The Italian Filippo Lippi is acclaimed in the art world for his Madonna and Child, one of the paintings of Jesus during His childhood together with His mother, the Virgin Mary. This work was created in 1452 with tempera on panel.

From El Greco, or Domenicos Theotokopoulos, is the painting of Jesus entitled The Disrobing of Christ made with oil on canvass between the years 1577 and 1579. He also made The Holy Trinity around the same years, which shows Christ in the arms of the Father, while being surrounded by angels and the Holy Spirit symbolized by a pure white dove.

Another famous works that reflect the crucifixion of Jesus are the 1610 and 1614 Baroque paintings of the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens called The Elevation of the Cross and The Descent from the Cross respectively. These were the famous altarpieces made for the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp.

These works are among the paintings of Jesus that up till now are looked upon as benchmarks of art as well as revered due to their religious messages. Restoration and preservation are carefully and skillfully implemented to preserve both the quality of the pieces as well as their spiritual significance.
